At Cowpens on January 17, 1781, Daniel Morgan baited the aggressive British commander Banastre Tarleton into a trap, using lines of militia to absorb the charge before regulars and cavalry enveloped the British force.
The near-total destruction of Tarleton's command crippled British strength in the South and is often studied as a tactical model of the double envelopment.
