A week after the surprise at Trenton, Washington slipped around a pursuing British force and struck their rear guard at Princeton on January 3, 1777, personally rallying his men under fire to win the field.
Coming back-to-back, Trenton and Princeton revived a cause that had been collapsing through the winter, restored Patriot morale, and proved Washington could out-maneuver British regulars.
