On a brutally hot June 28, 1778, Washington attacked the British column withdrawing across New Jersey. After an early near-rout, Washington rode forward, steadied the lines, and fought the enemy to a standstill.
Though tactically a draw, Monmouth showed a Continental Army transformed by its training at Valley Forge — able to stand toe-to-toe with British regulars. It was the last major battle in the North.
